The Blue Void
We are so so proud of one of our year 9 students who has won the Art Bytes competition!
Art Bytes is a national art and EdTech programme for year 5 and year 9 students in all educational settings, combining an inter-school art competition with a bespoke virtual gallery and in-person Celebration Events in cultural venues across England. It is based on 12 years’ experience in the North West and is proven to nurture talent, raise ambition and develop confidence and cultural capital, as well as support mental health and help develop vital skills for future employment.
As a School who supports students with Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs, many of our students have low self-confidence and may not have had a positive experience with education to date. Awards like this are so powerful to show our students that they really can achieve anything they want to.
We could not be prouder of DD and can’t wait to see his work in a gallery. Thank you to The Arts Society, Wrekin and Art Bytes for helping DD to realise his talent.
Here is what our Art Lead had to say about this amazing accolade.
This year, a member of The Arts Society, Wrekin, kindly sponsored our entry for the Art Bytes art competition providing our students with an exciting opportunity to produce a personal piece of artwork to be entered. Our year 9 students were given the topic of monochrome/single colour art with creative freedom to select the colour and content of their work. We had six entries from our key stage 3 students with three of them having their work shortlisted for voting. The winner entry from each school will then be entered for the regional and national award.
From our short-listed entries DD received the most votes coming first place meaning that DD’s work was then entered into the regional and national award judged by a panel of artists. DD won the National Award and was presented with this news by the Soup Company filming his reaction. DD talked about his work and the materials he used.
DD’s piece was titled “The Blue Void” , he chose the colour blue and began by painting his base blue, he used paint pens, paint, and chalk pastels to create doodles, layers and depth to his work. DD noted that the work can be open to interpretation as the work he produced creatively flowed from his mind. DD also stated that he ‘never thought that someone like him could win such a competition’.
I hope that winning gives him confidence in his own abilities, he has achieved so much in art this year and I look forward to seeing his skills, abilities and confidence grow even further.
